A MAN extradited for the credit union robbery in which Garda hero Adrian Donohoe was shot, will stand trial alongside another man, also charged with the same crime.

Last week James Flynn, 31, of Ravensglen, Newry, Co Down, was committed for trial in the Special Criminal Court charged with the 2013 robbery at Lordship Credit Union.

State wants to try Flynn alongside 34-year-old Brendan Treanor for same robbery

He was returned to Ireland on July 29 and appeared in Dublin District Court the following day.

The court heard that Flynn, who said he was a businessman, told Gardai: “I strongly deny the charge.”

The state wants to try Flynn alongside 34-year-old Brendan Treanor for the same heist.

However, Treanor’s lawyers have asked that he be tried separately as he has already spent more than a year in custody.

A source said: ‘The defense fought for the Treanor case to proceed immediately, but it was delayed by Flynn’s extradition. He was originally charged in July last year.

“Naturally, given the cost of this case, it makes more sense to try them together.”

In a ruling in June, Judge Tony Hunt said he had to consider Mr Treanor’s rights, but also said it was undesirable to conduct two such lengthy trials separately.

He said the six-month estimate provided by the DPP to allow Flynn to prepare for trial was “surprisingly long” and that he must consider the costs involved. He set a new trial date for January 11.

This means that the two men will probably be tried together, on that date, before the Special Criminal Court.

In a bail application, Treanor’s lawyers argued it was an attack on his ‘dignity’ to keep him in custody away from his newborn son in circumstances where his trial was postponed until January of next year.

However, the three-judge tribunal ruled there was a real risk of interference with witnesses if Mr Treanor was released on bail.

Aaron Brady, 30, was found guilty of the murder of Det Gda Donohoe by a majority verdict of 11 to one in Central Criminal Court on August 11, 2020.

The father-of-one with a final address in New Road, Crossmaglen, Co Armagh has been sentenced to the mandatory murder sentence of life imprisonment.

As he had been found guilty of murdering a garda acting in accordance with his duty, the judge ordered that he serve a minimum of 40 years.

Brady was also sentenced to 14 years for stealing €7,000 – a sentence which will run alongside the life sentence – from Lordship Credit Union.
