The US Department of Education announced a change PSLF program rules for a limited time; borrowers can receive credit for past payments made that would not otherwise qualify for the PSLF. Employees who work at a nonprofit organization, such as MaineHealth or other health care facilities, for 10 years and who meet specific requirements, may be eligible for forgiveness of the remaining balance of their student loan federal.
You have until 10/31/2022 to take advantage of the PSLF limited waiver opportunity. If you have federal student loans, you may qualify for this opportunity, even if you have been denied for the PSLF in the past. The projected average rebate under the PSLF is over $68,000 for healthcare employees who have followed the tuition.io tools.
Q. What should I do if I have student loans?
A. Register with MaineHealth partner, tuition.io to create an account and follow the PSLF process. You will then receive an email from ‘studentloans’ inviting you to register with tuition.io. Follow the registration instructions to get started.
Q. What if I have already received forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) or paid off my loan? Can I get a refund for payments that didn’t count toward my discount, but do count toward this limited-time opportunity?
A. No. If you have already received a rebate or repaid your loans, you are not eligible for a refund of previous payments.
Q. When can I expect to receive a response regarding my application?
A. Tuition.io is the tool to process your request.
You will need to complete your game first. MaineHealth will then complete the employer portion (verification of dates of service) within 3 weeks of your request. However, the US Department of Education takes much longer. The important thing to note is that if you are applying for the waiver, the only date that matters is when you and your employer submit your application via tution.io to the Department of Education.
Q. How can I check the status of my application?
A. You can check the status of your application at any time by logging into the platform and viewing your dashboard.
Q. What if I have had MaineHealth service interruptions (termination, per diem)?
A. You will need to submit a PSLF form for each eligible employer you worked for full-time while making student loan payments. If you had a break in service, you may need to submit more than one form for the same eligible employer.
Q. What happens if I move between different local health systems within MaineHealth?
A. You will need to submit a PSLF form for each local health system you have worked for full-time while making student loan payments since 10/01/2007 by 10/31/2022.
Q. What about care team members who are currently in the PSLF process and have recently submitted an out-of-system request?
A. We encourage you to register and link your loans on the tuition.io platform, even if you have already submitted your application outside of the system. This will allow you to track progress on your application, make recommendations for new applications (each year) and provide educational information.
Q. Why do the dates for this program seem so random? Back to 2007? Deadline October 31, 2022?
The PSLF program was launched in 2007, so this is the first year you can earn credits for the program. The deadline of October 31, 2022 refers only to the limited exemption period of the PSLF. This waiver is intended for those who need to make corrections or wish to reapply for credit with PSLF.
Q. What is the deadline for me to submit my application to be considered for Limited Waiver approval?
A. Please do not wait. We strongly recommend that you submit your application NO LATER THAN October 1, 2022. Applications are fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis. Late applications may not be completed in time to meet the program deadline.
