LPSS teacher pays stipend as district tackles teacher shortage

LAFAYETTE PARISH, Louisiana (KLFY) — There’s still money on the table if you have what it takes to teach. the Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) attracted attention with its teacher recruitment and retention stipends.

Nicky Walker is the Parish School District’s Diversity and Equity Talent Coordinator. She said the recruiting puzzle has many pieces and it can be particularly difficult when there is a shortage.

“It’s difficult because we are looking for quality certified teachers. Everyone is looking for that. It’s not just Lafayette Parish,” Walker explained.

School districts across the country are facing a shortage of teachers, especially since the pandemic.

LPSS’s announcement of the allowances in April opened the doors and the district reports an increase in the number of people requesting information about available jobs.

“We see people coming from outside and coming to Lafayette Parish,” Walker said. “It’s a good thing because we want to attract quality educators to our parish. That works. It feels good.”

Briefly, there are three stipend options: (2) $5,000 stipends, both of which are lump sum payments, or a $4,000 stipend spread over two years.

LPSS Director of Employment Services, John Mouton, says his department is responsible for hiring all LPSS employees.

“We’re getting more and more people calling and saying ‘what’s up?’ We’ve also seen interest from our own teachers who are trying to figure out what they need to do to make sure they’re eligible for the allowance,” Mouton said.

Mouton said they still have vacancies, although some people have already signed up.

“As the summer progresses, there will be more openings, Mouton noted. We will be hiring by then.”

All stipends require the qualified applicant to teach at one of the 12 selected LPSS schools listed below:
