Complaints and scams are increasing in the high-priced consumer market

Between soaring prices and low inventory, consumers have been through a lot over the past two years.

“It’s just becoming a tough market, from a real estate, auto perspective, and with rising interest rates, it’s going to continue to be tough for all of us,” said Robert Blount, a buyer. of cars.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the automotive industry. In fact, auto sales and repairs were the top complaint category in 2021.

The Consumer Federation of America says the auto industry has held the top spot for six years now, adding, “Clearly auto sales and repairs are a long-standing problem.”

The country’s boiling housing market and strained rental scene have also prompted many complaints.

“He told me to buy gift cards,” said housing scam victim Joseph Veras. “He wanted me to send the money. He told me to take a picture of the front and back of the card and the receipt and send it to him.”

In South Florida, Veras sent $4,000 to a bogus landlord to rent a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home. His interpreter tried to help him.

“I called the company, which is no longer in service,” said Amy Hair, an ASL interpreter. “I called the other cell phone number; it was out of service. »

Other top categories on the list of complaints include home improvement repairs, retail purchases, and consumer debt and credit.

In total, consumer advocacy groups collected 208,000 complaints in 2021, a slight decrease from the previous year.

They secured more than $119 million in consumer relief – also less than in 2020.
